UCLA Builds a Graduate Student Fitness Center with a Modular Building

Pre-fabricated, modular buildings do not have to be temporary. Higher education uses modular buildings for classrooms, administrative spaces, recreational buildings, dining, and specialized facilities. UCLA used a modular building for its new health and wellness center.

The University of California at Los Angeles recently built a new recreation center, Kinross Recreation Center. Facilities calls it KREC for short. KREC is available to registered UCLA graduate students, faculty, staff, and emeriti/retirees. It offers cardio and strength equipment, a small gym area, and outdoor fitness area. It is unique that KREC is not available for undergraduate students. This facility is a little more exclusive to older membership on campus. It already has a much larger fitness facility called the John Wooden Center that is available to all students. It also has a tennis center, the Hitch Basketball Center with outdoor courts, a ropes challenge course, aquatic facility, bike center, and several small parks.

When evaluating types of buildings, UCLA decided to purchase a pre-fabricated building for the KREC. It chose an E&I contract partner called Mobile Modular to build and installs the new KREC building. This article has six images of this new UCLA fitness center at its Los Angeles location.

What are Group Purchasing Organizations for Higher Education?

Group purchasing organizations for higher education competitively solicit contracts or create negotiated contracts on behalf of multiple organizations. With a focus on cost reduction, plus procurement streamlining, GPOs within universities and higher education are becoming more popular. GPOs leverage spending across institutions and negotiate discounts and preferred provider agreements. Collective purchasing attracts more suppliers due to larger contract sizes. GPOs help schools with cost reduction, access to more products and suppliers, expert negotiation, spend analysis, streamlined purchasing, compliance, sustainability options, and diverse suppliers.
