An E&I 1-Minute Read, Featuring Our Partner Enterprise
Is your institution offering car sharing on campus?
Many schools offer cars on-demand at their campus, looking for accessible, sustainable, and more cost-effective alternatives to cars and parking on campus. A car share program can help faculty, staff, and students to find quick access to vehicles to run errands or see family. Car sharing can reduce the number of vehicles on your school's campus, and keep staff and students from worrying about car ownership and costs that come with vehicle maintenance.
Car shares are available 24/7, and starting the program is as easy as logging into an app and reserving through a contact-less process. With this transportation service, the costs of gas, maintenance, secondary insurance plus driving miles are included when someone checks out a car. A car share serves needs for people who do not want to bring a vehicle to campus, but occasionally need access to a vehicle throughout the course of a week or month or campus. Just driving up to Walmart to get a few things, or running to an interview can be a hassle for a bus rider or person who normally uses a bike for transport. A check-out process car share can help fill a void, and bring down need for parking on campus.
Enterprise CarShare is a growing service with Enterprise Mobility. Students generally only need to be 18 years or older at most universities, and international driver's licenses are accepted.

3 Universities that Offer Students Car Sharing on Campus
1. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)
Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University provides students, faculty, and staff access to rental vehicles right on campus. The program is open to individuals at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Cars are stationed in the East Campus Garage and can be reserved by the hour or day using an app or a physical card. The service includes gas, insurance, and maintenance, making it a convenient option for students who need occasional transportation for errands, internships, or weekend trips. CMU’s program is particularly student-friendly, with no application fee and a modest annual membership cost of $35. International students are also eligible, provided they submit driving records from their home countries. The university emphasizes ease of use and accessibility, allowing students to unlock vehicles with their phones and return them to the same location after use.
2. University of California, Berkeley
UC Berkeley offers a university car share program, in the small but densely populated town of Berkeley. Students can join the car share program with a valid driver’s license—even if they’re under 21 or international students. The program offers 24/7 access to vehicles parked on or near campus, which can be reserved through an app. Membership includes gas, insurance, and up to 180 miles per day, making it ideal for students who need flexible transportation without the hassle of car ownership. The car share program helps reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions. Students can use the service for academic-related travel, grocery runs, or weekend getaways, all while avoiding the costs of parking permits and vehicle maintenance.
3. Boston University (BU)
Boston University offers car-sharing services to its student body. With a dense urban campus and limited parking, BU’s car share program provides a practical alternative to owning a car. Students 18 and older can apply for membership and begin reserving vehicles almost immediately after approval. Cars are located throughout the campus and surrounding neighborhoods, making them easily accessible for students living both on and off campus. BU’s program supports both personal and academic travel needs, and the cars can be used for short trips or full-day excursions. The university promotes the service as part of its broader sustainability initiatives, encouraging students to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining mobility.

An article by SAP Concur for E&I's members
The Most Critical Element of a Modern Travel Risk Management Program in Higher Education
Student, faculty, and staff travel is on the rise, both domestically and internationally. Administration has its hands full in protecting travelers from health and security risk, and dealing with duty of care expectations. Data is critical. But what are other systems and procedures that are commonly used to manage risk? These could be: pre-trip registrations, bookings only through a managed travel program, managing self-booked travel, web-based location "check ins," and HR/SIS Data. SAP Concur recommends establishing a travel security committee, taking inventory of systems and procedures, and consolidating systems to get more accurate data.
