Sound system and LED lighting upgrade the fan experience at Spartan Stadium, and across Michigan State sporting venues

Throughout 2023, Michigan State University did a significant fan experience upgrade to Spartan Stadium, and across multiple sporting venues on campus. The project brought cutting-edge distributed audio systems to Spartan Stadium and to 6 other sporting locations. Michigan State also installed high-definition LED display systems and control room upgrades. Anthony James Partners was the partner that Michigan State chose for design, financial modeling, procurement, and construction oversight. Anthony James Partners designs large custom LED scoreboard displays, broadcast studios, control rooms, experiential spaces, concourses and digital signage. See your E&I contract with Anthony James Partners.

The new audio and acoustic system at Spartan Stadium is unique. Its design allows it to be installed in confined spaces, provides a long throw on sound, and provides even coverage over a large area. This has now created an unmatched fan experience, which is the goal of major stadium audio system investments. Jack Covert, the Senior Design Engineer for Anthony James Partners, stated that the new audio system at Spartan Stadium is "one of the best-sounding systems in all of college football." System clarity eliminates any feedback from the input sources. The expectations for excellent audio and video are important in bringing fans back to in-person events.

Michigan State chose a sound system specifically targeted at applications where very high output and precise pattern control is required. The system's modularity allowed it to scale as needed for very long-throw applications, such as those encountered in stadium end-zone/scoreboard deployments. The new audio results in consistent coverage. For example, fans in the far end zone used to have to walk all the way up to the field to listen to music for example, and now it is consistent stadium coverage for a better fan experience.

Besides just Spartan Stadium, the scope of work also included updates in sound and display to:

  • Tom Izzo Basketball Hall of History: LED display systems, scoring, digital signage, control, sound reinforcement
  • Breslin Center (student events arena): LED display systems, scoring, digital and static signage
  • Munn Ice Arena: LED display systems, scoring, integrated digital and static signage
  • Skandalaris Football Center: LED display systems, scoring, integrated digital and static signage
  • Football Gateway Hall of Champions: LED display systems, AV system design and engineering, sound reinforcement

Michigan State is committed to producing the best fan experience, and investing to compete in all collegiate sports.

Case Study: Tarkett Sports

Tarkett Sports built an indoor facility in Pitman, NJ with a 24,000 square feet of surface, that looks like hardwood, but is not. The facility has five basketball courts, that also converts to seven volleyball courts or 15 pickleball courts. It is surfaced with Tarkett's versatile Omnisports Active+ vinyl flooring system, a true multi-use surface. What makes it unique is the Class 3 shock absorption that is simple prepping for many functions. The facility can change from soccer to baseball to basketball to volleyball, to even indoor football on bad weather days. It just takes a minute or two to change from one sport to another. The surface is laid directly on concrete and can be installed quickly. Maintenance is simple too, just a dust mop between games to ensure cleanliness. There is a lot of safety success with this product, and there are less knee and other injuries.
