CUNY Approves a New Vending Machine Operations Partner

The City University of New York (CUNY) Board of Trustees approved a contract with Compass USA, Inc., a foodservice management company responsible for managing vending machine operations across all CUNY campuses. The contract has been approved for the next five years with an option to be renewed for another five years.

CUNY has approved a new vending machine operations partner for the next 5 years.

Compass Group USA was approved as the vending machine operations partner of CUNY for the next five years, with an option to be renewed for another five years. CUNY has a commitment to the enhancement of campus life, it offers a range of food and beverages, and strives for operational efficiency. The previous contract holder for vending operations was Canteen, which is a Compass Group subsidiary, so the college expects an easy transition. Joseph Loughren, the CFO of Queens College, commented “Prior to CUNY Board of Trustees approval of the Compass USA, Inc. contract, the college used Canteen, a Compass USA, Inc. subsidiary, to manage campus vending machines. Under that arrangement, CUNY held the contract with Compass and so the college does not expect there to be changes under the new CUNY arrangement.”

The vending partner focuses on health and environmental sustainability, and vending platforms feature energy-efficient LED lighting, motion-sensor dimmers, and locally sourced products when possible. It partners with suppliers that offer recyclable and compostable products, and makes plant-based options more accessible. Compass Group even won multiple awards in 2024, including World's Most Admired Companies by Fortune.

The overall Compass Group brand, including subsidiary Canteen, has always been responsive to CUNY's needs. CUNY and Compass Group have always worked well together to address higher or lower demands of products and to identify improvements in offering and experience. Besides just vending, Compass Group also has chefs and frontline teams to work with CUNY's dining services.

Queens College has vending machines in nearly every building, acting as a convenient, affordable and accessible source of food and beverages on campus. The CUNY administration commented that they should be managed by a company that reflects the needs of CUNY students, faculty and staff. See the full announcement by CUNY here.
