Yale Athletics Installs Mobile Locker Rooms, to Keep Facilities on Campus During Renovation

The athletic department at Yale University in West Haven, CT was ready to begin the repair and renovation of their existing facilities utilized by the football and track programs. During the renovation, the department wanted to keep their athletic programs on campus and needed space to continue operations, which led them to acquire temporary facilities.

Yale athletics completed a major $38M renovation of the Lapham Field House in August 2024, upgrading facilities foor football and track & field. The project at the Smilow Field Center includes new locker rooms, lounges, a 110-person meeting space, nutrition stations, and improved athletic medicine and hydrotherapy. Renovations to Smilow Field Center ledto the facility serving as the central hub for football and track. Extensive upgrades involved converting the area to a synthetic turf surface, featuring dedicated spaces for each team. The new facility includes a multi-directional track with specialized areas for field events. Upgrades will enhance the student-athlete experience, and modernize amenities for training and recovery.

Mobile Modular was selected to provide 7 custom units for the campus ranging from locker rooms to exercise areas to massage therapy. With 29 floors [(1) 6-plex, (1) 5-plex, (3) 3-plex, (1) 7-plex, plus a double-wide] and a total of 18,368 sq. ft., Mobile Modular provided the custom modular buildings on campus at Yale University for a 2-year lease within the time frame provided.

Mobile Modular worked with the athletic department heads and built 7 new units of various sizes to their specifications. The Mobile Modular team worked with Consigli Construction onsite during the installation process. We obtained engineered foundation drawings due to the local town inspector requiring low-grade footings. Upon Consigli’s completion of foundation installation using the foundation drawings provided by Mobile Modular, we began the installation of 7 custom units on Yale’s campus. After the building installation was finished, decks and ramps were added for accessibility. The modular building solution was essential for the Yale University Athletic Department and allowed the student-athletes to continue as normal during the renovations.
