An E&I 2-Minute Read, Featuring Anthony James Partners
In Fall 2020, University of California San Diego began a new era, now competing in NCAA Division I. Its 23 intercollegiate athletic teams and nearly 600 athletes now had national exposure, after UC San Diego joined the Big West Conference. To prepare for this jump, UC San Diego's Department of Athletics worked with Anthony James Partners to redesign the existing Dana Chaiken Production Studio. It also designed and built a new, second production control room in the RIMAC Arena. UC San Diego's athletics now annually produces 160+ home events for distribution on various platforms. This includes both ESPN3 and Big West Network, while still maintaining the in-facility board shows.
This new production studio is state-of-the-art. It features three control rooms connected with Fiber backbone to all UCSD sporting venues. The RIMAC Arena, Triton Soccer Stadium, Triton Ballpark, Canyonview Aquatic Center, and Triton Softball Field are now fully connected to the studio. Each of these has a broadcast cable package to connect them to the new production facility. This centralizes control from the production studio and enables full utilization of the newly expanded capabilities at each venue.
Upgrades included the same type of equipment used in a professional sports venue or television studio. Anthony James Partners worked closely with UC San Diego to redefine the early direction of the project, and upgraded on what UC San Diego even thought was possible. For example, fiber connections were initially expected to be priced at 10x higher than the actual cost. Anthony James Partners was able to drastically reduce implementation costs, maximize resources and manage the procurement process.
UC San Diego accomplished a big project on a limited budget in the transition to D1. Upgrades have set a standard for Mid-Major in-venue and linear broadcast production capabilities. See the full article here.
