In San Antonio, the Trinity Tigers worked with an E&I contract partner, Tarkett Sports to deliver a turnkey field solution. Trinity University has an ongoing Athletics Master Plan that was originally announced in 2020. The plan includes installing a new baseball and softball surfaces, plus a new practice football field. In this project, Trinity utilized Tarkett Sports’ artificial turf, running track surfacing, athletic flooring, design services, and even civil construction team.

Tarkett Sports Projects at Trinity University include:

  • E.M. Stevens Baseball Field: FieldTurf DoublePlay Series
  • Jesse H. Jones Softball Field: FieldTurf TripleThreat Series
  • Trinity University Stadium (football): FieldTurf’s Vertex Prime with CoolPlay
  • Trinity University Stadium (running track): Beynon Sports BSS 1000 [resurfaced in 2022]
  • Jim Potter Intramural Field: FieldTurf System

The baseball and softball fields had not been upgraded since 1992 so new field development was over due. Tarkett installed FieldTurf, its state-of-the-art artificial turf system to Trinity’s E.M. Stevens baseball field and Jesse H. Jones softball field. Tarkett oversaw the project from the design stage to the build and installation. The construction team at Tarkett also implemented upgrades in new dugouts, facility lighting, backstop netting and player development areas. Tarkett used 3D renderings of the dugouts to align with campus aesthetics. Tarkett’s design-build delivery method allowed Trinity stakeholders to request and evaluate prospective changes.

The new dugouts at Trinity University include cast-in-place concrete baseball dugouts with custom bat and helmet storage and custom cantilevered player benches. FieldTurf, a subsidiary of Tarkett Sports, conceptually designed the dugouts.

Tarkett, and its subsidiary FieldTurf, did rigorous testing with high-tech motion cameras to interpret ball-surface interaction, speed and consistency. The three critical performance criteria are ball speed, ball line and ball bounce.

What are Group Purchasing Organizations for Higher Education?

Group purchasing organizations for higher education competitively solicit contracts or create negotiated contracts on behalf of multiple organizations. With a focus on cost reduction, plus procurement streamlining, GPOs within universities and higher education are becoming more popular. GPOs leverage spending across institutions and negotiate discounts and preferred provider agreements. Collective purchasing attracts more suppliers due to larger contract sizes. GPOs help schools with cost reduction, access to more products and suppliers, expert negotiation, spend analysis, streamlined purchasing, compliance, sustainability options, and diverse suppliers.
