Clemson University offers its students many high-quality fitness, strength, and nutrition areas. Clemson has ongoing expansions and modernizations of campus recreation offerings. For example, the Fike Recreation Center is the main, long-standing student recreation facility on campus. It hosts many of the university's fitness classes and equipment. The Douthit Hills Fitness Center in a residential complex provides convenient options for students on campus. The Snow Family Outdoor Fitness and Wellness Complex is a premier lakefront recreation area is one of Clemson's most recently dedicated fitness facilities, and provides students with access to a sandy beach, kayaks, paddleboards and a sand volleyball court. And a new $73 million student health facility on campus is under construction in partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

For Clemson, Better Technicians and Service Levels are Crucial in a Fitness Equipment Partner

Does Clemson look for quality fitness products or quality vendor partners? The answer is both. When it comes to campus recreation fitness equipment, the answer is both. Clemson often purchases products from Core Health & Fitness because of the service levels it provides. Jenny Rodgers, the assistant director of Fitness and Wellness at Clemson University, said the goal is to keep open lines of communication long after the sale is made and equipment delivered. “These relationships have become helpful during times where we need a quick response to a maintenance issue, or when our plans for our spaces quickly pivot,” said Rodgers. Clemson is constantly replacing older equipment. Jimmy Mullinax, the director of Facilities and Operations at Clemson, said over the years they’ve developed great relationships with these companies, mainly because of a great sales team, good customer support and the provision of technicians to fix equipment during the warranty period. Clemson looks at cost-per-service visit spending, and if technicians from a fitness equipment partner go the extra mile.

Mullinax and Rodgers both said that Core Health & Fitness was a big help, especially during the pandemic. Core Health & Fitness worked with Clemson to draw up a floor plan to optimize gym space, but in a way that allowed for social distancing. Core Health & Fitness also provided free and discounted certifications for fitness center employees.

While price is important, the quality of the equipment, the warranty and the relationship are just as key. Mullinax stressed the importance of doing your research and developing those vendor partnerships with a couple of different companies. He said it’s vital to be upfront with them about what you need, and look for that same honesty in return as that makes a good sales rep — one who will tell you they don’t have what meets your needs, but points you to a competitor who does.

The Most Critical Element of a Modern Travel Risk Management Program in Higher Education

Student, faculty, and staff travel is on the rise, both domestically and internationally. Administration has its hands full in protecting travelers from health and security risk, and dealing with duty of care expectations. Data is critical. But what are other systems and procedures that are commonly used to manage risk? These could be: pre-trip registrations, bookings only through a managed travel program, managing self-booked travel, web-based location "check ins," and HR/SIS Data. SAP Concur recommends establishing a travel security committee, taking inventory of systems and procedures, and consolidating systems to get more accurate data.
