The Citrus Bowl Renovates, Upgrades AV Systems
A big name venue, the Citrus Bowl entertains huge crowds for large sporting events. Every year, the Citrus Bowl hosts the Florida Classic, Russell Athletic Bowl, and Capital One Bowl. It also hosts mega stars in country and pop for tens of thousands of fans. To hit ticket sales goals, it needed some major reconstructions and renovations, to keep the 30+ year old building up to date. Leaders at this iconic Orlando venue worked with AVI-SPL to handle the audiovisual integrations for a ten month renovation. AVI-SPL was tasked with helping the stadium "come alive" for spectators, particularly for concerts.

From the day AVI-SPL won the contract, it began engineering and CAD work design and development. Onsite leaders worked with AVI-SPL so that the necessary cable runs and installation of speakers could be completed, because there was an aggressive timeline. The team implemented and fine-tuned the systems that turn an event into an experience. This includes systems for sound distribution, broadcast, and closed-circuit TV distribution. AVI-SPL employs only the best sound technicians, and these technicians had to stay on the same page with end users, so that systems worked as intended. The team also had to coordinate with other trades, like plumbing and electrical, to see when they could work in other areas of the stadium. Planning is key to meeting deadlines.
All work needed to be completed in ten months, in time for college football's Florida Classic between rivals Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman University. Last minute work included concrete for the main concourse that was poured late in the timeline. That posed a major time crunch as 90 percent of the 85 miles of broadcast cabling would run through cable trays on the main concourse. Risers that connect the different levels for cabling would also have to be finished.
Just in time for the Florida Classic, AVI-SPL finished installing all of the audio, which was primarily all Harman brands – including the JBL speakers, BSS audio processors, and Crown amplifiers that were utilized for the majority of the audio system. Communication between AVI-SPL and the Orlando Citrus Bowl was key to make sure all details stayed on track, on time, and on budget.
